Ferry Services
Nova Scotia to Newfoundland & Labrador

Year-round vehicle and passenger ferry service is provided by Marine Atlantic between North Sydney, NS and Port aux Basques, NL (on the west coast of the province). Crossing time is six hours. From mid-June to mid-September, an additional ferry operates between North Sydney, NS and Argentia, NL (45 km from Route 1 and 131 km from St. John's). Crossing time is 12-14 hours.

Strait of Belle Isle

The passenger/auto ferry Apollo operates on a daily schedule, from early April to early January (pending ice conditions), serving the Strait of Belle Isle region between St. Barbe, NL and Blanc Sablon on the Quebec-Labrador Border.  Take this ferry to reach Route 510.  Crossing time is 90 minutes.

Lewisporte to Labrador

The passenger/auto/freight ferry Sir Robert Bond operates on a weekly schedule from mid-June to late November, with passenger/auto service concluding in late September, departing Lewisporte on Fridays for Happy Valley Goose Bay via Cartwright. This voyage takes about 40 hours. There is an additional crossing that departs Goose Bay on Sundays for Cartwright and returns to Goose Bay on Mondays. This voyage is about 13 hours each way.

Coastal Labrador

The passenger/freight vessel Northern Ranger operates on a weekly schedule between Black Tickle in Southern Labrador and Nain in Northern Labrador, calling in Goose Bay north and southbound. The vessel operates from mid-June to mid-November.

Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Bar Harbor, Maine

Carrying up to 900 passengers and 240 cars across the Gulf of Maine at highway speeds from mid-May to mid-October, the Cat makes the crossing up to twice daily between Maine and Nova Scotia. Designed for ocean conditions, the Cat cuts a six-hour journey on a traditional car ferry down to two hours and 45 minutes. The Cat saves its passengers a full day’s driving between Yarmouth, NS and Bar Harbor, Maine (over 600 miles or 1000 km).
