GOLDBORO GAS PLANT
The Goldboro Gas Plant is located 2 km (1.2 mi) inland from the offshore pipeline landfall at Betty's Cove, near Goldboro, NS. The 105-acre (42 hectare) site was chosen with input from area residents to ensure optimal potential for both tourism and industrial development. The plant is located adjacent to an industrial park developed by the municipality of Guysborough to facilitate future industrial development in the area.
At peak construction, over 600 people worked on the site, over 90 per cent of whom were Nova Scotians.
Production
Gas is transported to the plant via a subsea pipeline from the Thebaud central processing platform located approximately 200 km (124 mi) offshore. The plant can process 14.4 million m3 (508.3 MMcf) of quality natural gas every day for delivery to market via the $1.7 billion Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline (M&NP). This much gas could satisfy the daily natural gas needs of a city the size of Montreal. Approximately 20,000 bpd of natural gas liquids (NGLs) will be transported by underground pipeline to a fractionation plant in Point Tupper. The M&NP transports gas from the Goldboro plant through a 30-inch (76 cm) diameter underground pipe into Maritime and New England markets.
Interesting Facts:
- There is an estimated 25 km (15.5 mi) of pipe in the main gas plant
- About 1100 concrete foundations were needed to support the gas plant
- The gas plant has the one of the largest slugcatchers in the world, necessary because of the volumes of gas and liquids and the pressure at which the gas is flowing

IMPERIAL OIL LIMITED DARTMOUTH REFINERY
Imperial Oil's Dartmouth refinery was founded in 1918 and has grown continuously, now occupying 260 hectares (650 acres). The refinery is one of four similar Imperial Oil companies in Canada. Depending on the composition of the crude oil, it has a processing capacity of 89,000 bpd (13.9 million litres). The refinery employs more than 200 people and contributes over $20 million annually in salaries, benefits and taxes to the community.
Products and Capabilities:
- The refinery processes over 4 billion litres (1.07 billion gallons) of crude oil each year
- The refinery manufactures 52 different products, most of which are fuels such as gasoline, diesel, stove oil, jet fuel and home heating oil
- The plant also produces liquid asphalt and liquefied petroleum gases such as propane
Most of these products are shipped to customers in the Atlantic Provinces and Eastern Quebec through a network of agents and distributors.
Facilities:
- Three wharves, servicing coastal and foreign-going tankers

NORTH ATLANTIC REFINING LTD.
Located on Newfoundland’s southeast coast, North Atlantic Refining is closer to international sources of crude in the North Sea, West Africa, and the Persian Gulf than any other refinery in North America. Its clean, low-sulphur fuels are distributed locally and exported worldwide, to the tune of $4 billion annually.
As Newfoundland & Labrador’s only oil refinery, North Atlantic is one of the province's top 10 employers. Upwards of 500 people work at the refinery in Come By Chance, and 100 more work in its home-heat and retail gasoline chains.
Over the years, more than $850 million in upgrades and new equipment have been invested in the refinery. These investments have helped ensure a safe, efficient, and reliable operation. As a major player in the province, North Atlantic contributes more than $160 million a year to the provincial economy including $76 million in employee wages and benefits and $40 million in local procurement. Annually North Atlantic supports charities through its $250,000 Community Giving initiatives.
Facilities:
- Crude storage: 3.6 million bbl
- Intermediate and finished product storage: 3.6 million bbl
- Butane storage: 300,000 bbl facility
- Largest refinery dock in North America: accommodating vessels up to 326,000 dwt
- Two state-of-the-art tugboats

POINT TUPPER FRACTIONATION PLANT
The Point Tupper Natural Gas Liquids fractionation plant is located on a 72 acre site approximately five km from Port Hawkesbury, NS.
Production:
- Natural gas liquids are transported to the fractionation plant from Goldboro gas plant via a 58 km (36 mi) long 8-9 inch buried pipeline.
- The plant can process approximately 7000 barrels of propane, 3000 barrels of butane and 10,000 barrels of condensate every day. That is enough propane to fill 63,000 20-pound barbecue tanks, enough butane to fill 11 million lighters, and enough condensate to produce all the gasoline a car needs to drive around the world 515 times.
-
Interesting fact:
The 11 horizontal gas storage tanks, or "bullets", are among the largest in Canada, with a diameter of almost 4 m (13.1 ft) and 30 m (98.4 ft) in length.
