NOIA Focuses on the Advantages of Exporting
ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND, November 19, 2004
– NOIA, the voice of East Coast Canada oil and gas, is holding Beyond our Borders, a seminar highlighting export opportunities in the oil and gas industry. The seminar will be held on Thursday, November 25th at the Delta St. John’s Hotel and Conference Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland. During this event, NOIA will also be releasing an Export Strategy, which will aid members when planning for export opportunities and ultimately pursuing them. The strategy has been created to compliment markets highlighted in the seminar and identify the key factors that may aid individual companies in identifying other markets for their business.
Sessions will feature discussions on opportunities in other regions of Canada and other parts of the world such as Kazakhstan. NOIA’s Chairperson, Philip Whelan believes there are tremendous opportunities for Newfoundland companies to develop business in this area. "Kazakhstan is often referred to as the "Jewel of Central Asia". After two visits to Kazakhstan I understand why. Kazakhstan has estimated recoverable oil reserves of 56.4 billion barrels. Over the past five years there has been over 30 billion dollars in committed investments.” While in Kazakhstan, Mr. Whelan observed a need for many types of industrial goods and services as well as infrastructure. “Opportunities exist not only in oil and gas but in many areas of this developing country. For example, Kazakhstan’s plans to build a fleet of 50 naval vessels by the year 2015.”
International speakers for this event include Alan Grant of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) Nira Shearer and Artur Iralin of the Canadian Embassy in Kazakhstan, and Adil Shakhatbayev, of the Agip Kazakhstan North Caspian Operating Company. Mr. Shakhatbayev will profile the Kashagan offshore project – the world's largest offshore discovery in the last 30 years, which has estimated reserves of up to 12 billion barrels of oil.
The seminar will also host keynote luncheon speaker, Kurt Abraham, managing/international editor of World Oil Magazine. Mr. Abraham will bring considerable knowledge of the global oil and gas industry and will discuss current activity distribution around the world, and future export opportunities.
Other regions of Canada, such as British Columbia, will be highlighted at the seminar as well. East Coast Canada’s experience in northern environments will allow local companies to play a role in this new oil and gas region. To further cultivate relationships with BC, a large contingent of businesses from the west coast will be attending NOIA’s seminar to pursue joint venture opportunities between the west and east coasts. The delegation will be in St. John’s for a number of days meeting with local companies and learning more about the oil and gas industry in this province.
