Successful NOIA Conference Wraps Up in St. John’s
St. John’s--June 19, 2009
– NOIA’s 25th annual international petroleum conference wrapped up today with an animated panel discussion on
Challenges & Opportunities in Uncertain Times
and a closing luncheon featuring David Collyer of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.
Michael Economides, an expert on energy geopolitics, moderated the panel discussion which featured Wade Locke of Memorial University, Ian Way of ConocoPhillips Canada Resources Corp., Jim Keating of Nalcor Energy and David Barrowman of Wood Mackenzie.
Panelists covered a variety of issues, including the need for a prosperity plan to ensure our non renewable resources provide sustainable benefits. They also discussed some of the challenges facing our industry and how we might overcome them including developing local talent to meet human resources needs and using our collective experience to help shape Canada’s energy policy. Speakers also highlighted the need for cost reduction strategies and new technologies.
This year’s Conference boasted the highest attendance ever, with over 900 delegates. The theme,
Arctic Challenges – East Coast Solutions
, led to some interesting discussions about future opportunities in the North.
“In challenging times, more than ever, we need to work together to find unique solutions and further opportunities,” said Robert Cadigan, President & CEO of NOIA.
“This year’s NOIA conference was a huge success, not just in terms of attendance but also in the quality of speakers. Information exchange and debate really helps to further greater understand of our industry and its challenges.”
The closing keynote luncheon address featured David Collyer, President of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). He brought a message of optimism regarding the outlook for Canada’s oil and gas sector, encouraging that we not get caught up in the short-term challenges. He emphasized that the outlook in the medium to long-term was strong.
