Stephen Lewis to address NOIA 2009 International Conference

Where in the World is the World Headed?

ST. JOHN’S, June 8, 2009 - The Newfoundland & Labrador Oil & Gas Industries Association (NOIA) is proud to present Stephen Lewis as part of their 2009 Conference.

Mr. Lewis is Co-Director of AIDS-Free World, Chair of the Board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and a Professor in Global Health in the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University.  Mr. Lewis’ presentation, Where in the World is the World Headed?, will provide insight on some of the most pressing global concerns and the role of leadership and community engagement to inspire individual and collective action.

“Stephen Lewis is one of the world’s most influential speakers on human rights, social justice and international development,” said Conference Chair Caron Hawco.  “He is widely recognized as the founder of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) and for his efforts in the fight against AIDS in Africa.  He is very compassionate about his work and is incredibly dedicated to improving the human condition.  We feel very privileged to have him as one of our keynote speakers for this year’s conference and are looking forward to his presentation.”

Mr. Lewis has had a distinguished international career, including work with the United Nations spanning more than two decades. He was also an elected member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly from 1963 to 1978.  In 1970, he became leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, during which time he became leader of the Official Opposition.

Mr. Lewis is co-chair of the Leadership Programme Committee for the XVII International AIDS Conference, which was held in Mexico City in August 2008.  He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

Mr. Lewis is the author of the best-selling book, Race Against Time, and holds 28 honorary degrees from Canadian universities. His honours include: Companion of the Order of Canada; the Pearson Peace Medal; and in 2007, the Kingdom of Lesotho (a small mountainous country in Southern Africa) invested Mr. Lewis as Knight Commander of the Most Dignified Order of Moshoeshoe. The order is named for the founder of Lesotho; the knighthood is the country’s highest honour.

Stephen Lewis is the keynote speaker for the opening luncheon on day one of the conference.  His presentation will take place on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Delta Hotel, St. John’s, at 12:30 p.m.
