Discovery in Flemish Pass Basin is welcome news

St. John’s, NL; 8 April 2009 - NOIA (Newfoundland & Labrador Oil & Gas Industries Association) welcomes the announcement of a significant discovery in the Flemish Pass, an area approximately 500 kilometers east-northeast of St John’s.

StatoilHydro recently drilled a well on its Mizzen prospect and today announced that flow testing has resulted in a significant discovery. The company also announced that they will be seeking a Significant Discovery License (SDL) for the area. This is the first well drilled by StatoilHydro in Eastern Canada.

“NOIA members are excited by the announcement of a find in the deep waters of the Flemish Pass Basin,” said Robert Cadigan, President & CEO of NOIA. “Further exploration will be needed to determine the potential of this Basin and this future activity is important to NOIA members.”

The results indicate the presence of hydrocarbons in an underexplored deepwater basin. Only five wells have been drilled in the Flemish Pass Basin.

“We congratulate StatoilHydro on the successful completion of the Mizzen well, one of the most challenging wells drilled in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore, farther offshore and in waters nearly 10 times deeper than the Jeanne D’Arc Basin. We were also very glad that StatoilHydro recognized the strength of our local supply and service community in undertaking this challenge.”

An SDL, according to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB), is “a discovery indicated by the first well on a geological feature that demonstrates by flow testing the existence of hydrocarbons in that feature and, having regard to geological and engineering factors, suggests the existence of an accumulation of hydrocarbons that has potential for sustained production."
