NOIA Announces Scholarship Winner
St John’s, NL; 3 December 2008
- NOIA is pleased to announce the recipient of the NOIA - Hibernia Commemorative Scholarship for this academic year: Danika Wheeler of York Harbour.
The scholarship commemorates the first major milestone of Newfoundland & Labrador’s petroleum industry: production of first oil from the Hibernia field on 17 November 1997. Established with the generous support of the provincial oil and gas industry, this $1000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school student in Newfoundland & Labrador who is entering post-secondary studies with the intention to pursue a petroleum-related career. The scholarship is awarded to the student who best meets academic, extra-curricular and needs criteria.
Danika Wheeler, a graduate of St James All Grade School in Lark Harbour, is currently enrolled in post-secondary studies at Memorial University. She hopes to pursue a degree in chemical engineering and ultimately a career in the petroleum industry.
Wheeler has an impressive academic record, maintaining a more than 90% average, including many courses completed independently through distance education. She was honoured with a number of school awards including Principal’s Honour Roll, Student of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Graduate of the Year. She also received the Canada Day Youth Award in 2006 for her community involvement and volunteer efforts.
In addition to her academic success, Wheeler has demonstrated athletic and musical talents. She was a member of her high school volleyball team, has a first degree black belt in karate, works as a volunteer karate coach, and is a certified life guard and water safety instructor. She also plays the piano and has met with great success in the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival. Her school and community have benefited from her efforts in the areas of peer tutoring, coaching, student council, Education Week planning committee and music education.
NOIA President & CEO Bob Cadigan says Wheeler is a most deserving recipient of this award.
“One of NOIA’s 12 fundamental policy statements is that we will foster petroleum careers among Newfoundland & Labrador’s youth. The purpose, of course, is to ensure that we continue to have the capacity to support long-term petroleum development and that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have sustained employment opportunity from our oil and gas industry,” says Cadigan. “Danika has clearly demonstrated academic excellence, and a high level of extra-curricular activity and community involvement. Bright young Newfoundlanders such as this are the future of our industry.”
The NOIA Hibernia Commemorative Scholarship was established in 1997 with support from the following organizations: AMI Offshore; AOC Brown & Root Canada; United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry/British Consulate General, Toronto; Coflexip Stena Offshore; Elsag Bailey (Canada) Ltd; Fabcon Canada Limited; Halliburton Energy Services; Hibernia Management & Development Company Ltd; Morrison Hershfield Limited; NOIA; Noble Drilling (Canada) Ltd; PanCanadian Petroleum Limited; PCL Industrial Constructors Inc and Petro-Canada-Terra Nova Project.
