NOIA Seminar Looks at Next Steps for Hebron

St John’s, NL; 19 November 2008 – More than 280 delegates gathered at the NOIA Fall Seminar in St John’s today to learn what to expect next, as the Hebron project gets underway in Newfoundland & Labrador.

Jim Flood of ExxonMobil set the tone with an overview of the project and answered questions from the many participants eager to learn more about the province’s next major oil project.  Norvald Nilsen of StatoilHydro then discussed his company’s work on Grane, a project in the Norwegian offshore that has some similarities to Hebron, including heavy crude and a complex reservoir. Jim Keating of the Energy Corporation of Newfoundland & Labrador then discussed how the province, specifically the Bull Arm fabrication site, is gearing up for Hebron work.

The morning agenda concluded with a lively panel discussion which provided a local perspective on entering the global supply chain and working for and with major contractors. Entitled Local Lessons Learned – Hibernia and Beyond, the informative discussion featured the following panelists: Hal Stanley, Director of the Canada-Newfoundland & Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, speaking on regulatory issues; Jim Thistle, McInnes Cooper, speaking on contracting and purchasing issues; Gary Follett of fga-Consulting Engineers, speaking on engineering; and Fraser Edison of Rutter Inc, speaking on construction. Speaking from their own experiences in the provincial oil and gas industry, the panelists discussed what local businesses need to know about entering the global supply chain; developing joint ventures, partnerships and other working relationships with global majors; and handling the unexpected.  Overwhelmingly, the message from the panel was that, building on experience with Hibernia and subsequent projects, NOIA members have the capability to support development of the Hebron project: “We’re hardworking, we’re smart and we’re ready.”

NOIA’s seminar concluded with a sold-out luncheon featuring offshore industry veteran Wes Abel. Mr Abel capped off a 37 year career with Mobil Oil by leading the Hibernia development team from project initiation through the environmental hearing phase, project negotiations and development plan approval and into the construction phase. His luncheon address revisited the project, reviewed the lessons he took from the experience and expressed confidence in the ability of Newfoundland & Labrador petroleum industry to deliver Hebron successfully.
