St John’s, NL; 8 February 2008 - - NOIA is pleased to announce the recipient of the NOIA Outstanding Contribution Award for 2008: Mr David Keating, former Sector Manager for Transocean Canada Co.

Mr Keating is one of Newfoundland & Labrador’s petroleum pioneers. His offshore drilling career, spanning more than 30 years, has taken him from his home province to the North Sea, particularly Norway. He gained important knowledge and skills that he then brought back with him when he came to work in the Newfoundland & Labrador offshore. He undertook the role of Canada area manager with Transocean in the early nineties, and he also occupied that position from 2000 until his recent retirement in 2008.

Mr Keating has been instrumental in getting local service and supply companies involved in the global industry.  He has worked tirelessly to help smaller companies participate, ensuring that they took advantage of the opportunities available and campaigning for work to be completed locally.  One excellent example is the upgrade of the Henry Goodrich for a US Gulf of Mexico contract: although the upgrade was not in preparation for drilling operations offshore Newfoundland, most of the work was completed using Newfoundland & Labrador supply and service providers.

Industry safety has also been one of Mr Keating’s prime concerns.  His commitment has helped position our industry as a leader in safety. He and his team developed an innovative solution for the Cohasset/Panuke development that enabled a drill rig to safely moor within four meters of the platform, providing critical infrastructure for operational and emergency modes that helped get the project back on track.

In addition to his significant contribution in industry Mr Keating is very active in a variety of voluntary roles.  He currently serves as past chair of the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors and is a Director with the St John’s Port Authority.  His community involvement includes sitting on the Local Canadian Red Cross Advisory Committee and The Renews River Conservation Association.  Efficiently combining his industry and community commitments to personal and environmental protection, under his direction Transocean and its employees have supported several charitable causes, including the annual Red Cross Golf Tournament.

Steve Millan, NOIA Director, 2006 Outstanding Contribution Award recipient and Chair of the 2008 Outstanding Contribution Award Selection Committee, commented on the announcement: “On behalf of the NOIA Board of Directors and the 2008 Outstanding Contribution Award Selection Committee, I extend warmest congratulations to Mr Keating.  Over more than thirty years in the global offshore drilling industry, he has made a very significant contribution to the development of Newfoundland & Labrador’s oil and gas industry and to offshore safety wherever he has worked.  His commitment to our industry and our province has changed the way we operate for the better and sets the stage for further evolution for the future.”

Mr Keating will be presented with the honour at NOIA’s Oil and Gas Week Luncheon on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the Comfort Inn Airport.
