St. John’s, NL; 12 October 2007 - NOIA is pleased to announce the recipient of its Hibernia Commemorative Scholarship for this academic year: Cheryl Lorraine White of St Bride’s, Placentia Bay.
The scholarship commemorates the first major milestone of Newfoundland & Labrador’s petroleum industry: production of first oil from the Hibernia field on 17 November 1997. Established with the generous support of the provincial oil and gas industry, this $1000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school student in Newfoundland & Labrador who is entering post-secondary studies with the intention to pursue a petroleum-related career. The scholarship is awarded to the student who best meets academic, extra-curricular and needs criteria.
Cheryl White graduated from Fatima Academy in June 2007, with a solid academic record and an impressive slate of extracurricular and volunteering activities. Cheryl’s high school benefited from her volunteer work in the areas of student enhancement, tutoring, yearbook, canteen, technology, sound and lighting, and school clothing sales. In the community at large, she has been a member and director of the Friends of Cape St Mary’s, an actor and volunteer with Tramore Productions and a volunteer for Sacred Parish, Health Wellness, Community Food Bank, Kidney Foundation, Crime Prevention and Youth Advisory. Cheryl also found time for high school intramural sports, as well as her school’s basketball and floor hockey teams.
Cheryl’s hard work also earned her placement in a number of provincial and national youth programs including: national leadership conferences; Forum for Young Canadians; Encounters with Canada; International Summer School for Young Physicists (Waterloo, ON); Provincial Leadership Conference; and provincial Senior Mathematics League. In addition to high academic achievement, she has received awards for school, district and public speaking competitions, regional Enterprise Showcase, regional Mathematics League and the award for Best Actor in the Rant Like Rick Mercer competition.
Cheryl is currently pursuing an Engineering degree at Memorial University in St John’s. Upon completion of her program, she hopes to put her skills to work right here in Newfoundland & Labrador.
NOIA President & CEO Bob Cadigan maintains that young people like Cheryl represent a bright future for our province’s oil and gas industry.
“One of NOIA’s fundamental policies is that we will foster petroleum careers among Newfoundland & Labrador’s youth. The business case, of course, is to ensure continued capacity to support sustainable petroleum development. But we also want to make sure our young people have long-term employment opportunity around the world and in our own back yard,” Cadigan says. “Cheryl White is a great example of how our best and brightest can become involved and eventually help take Newfoundland & Labrador’s oil and gas industry to the next level. She’s a very worthy scholarship recipient.”
Now in its tenth year, NOIA’s Hibernia Commemorative Scholarship was established in 1997 with support from the following organizations: AMI Offshore; AOC Brown & Root Canada; United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry/British Consulate General, Toronto; Coflexip Stena Offshore; Elsag Bailey (Canada) Ltd; Fabcon Canada Limited; Halliburton Energy Services; Hibernia Management & Development Company Ltd; Morrison Hershfield Limited; NOIA; Noble Drilling (Canada) Ltd; PanCanadian Petroleum Limited; PCL Industrial Constructors Inc and Petro-Canada-Terra Nova Project.
