NOIA Community Champions present charitable cheques
St. John’s, NL; 24 May 2007
– In a much-anticipated follow-up to the NOIA 30
th
Anniversary Gala, held April 14, four Community Champions today presented their ‘winnings’ from the Community Champion Awards to the charitable causes that nominated them.
Bren/Kir Industrial Supplies, Spectrol Energy Services, North Atlantic Refining and ExxonMobil Canada were on hand at the NOIA offices in St John’s to formally present $5000 cheques to their chosen causes, representative of their outstanding charitable and volunteer contributions to Newfoundland & Labrador.
“While NOIA’s 30
th
Anniversary year is not yet over, this event is a truly happy conclusion to the Community Champion aspect of our celebrations,” says NOIA President and CEO Ted Howell. “We all had a wonderful time at the Gala, but this moment - actually handing over the money – is what it really is all about.
“For the past three decades our province’s petroleum community has supported thousands of worthy causes, giving millions of hours and millions of dollars throughout Newfoundland & Labrador.” says Howell. “Today honors that giving in the best possible way – by giving more.”
At NOIA’s 30
th
Anniversary Gala, NOIA members raised $20,000 ($5000 for each award recipient) to give back to the community. In a pleasing turn of events, one Community Champion chose to go above and beyond: having been nominated by two organizations, ExxonMobil, recipient in the petroleum company category, opted not to split its 'winnings' between two nominators, but to match the established funds and present two $5000 cheques!
Howell observed that “The total giving emerging from the NOIA 30th Anniversary and Community Champion Awards is now $25,000. Even after all we learned in the nomination process, the generosity of our own oil and gas community can still surprise us!”
Today, each Community Champion presented a $5000 cheque to a community organization, as follows:
Community Champion in the Small Membership Category, BREN/KIR Industrial Supplies: Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation
Community Champion in the Medium Membership Category, Spectrol Energy Services: Special Olympics Newfoundland & Labrador
Community Champion in the Large Membership Category, North Atlantic Refining: Special Olympics Newfoundland & Labrador
Community Champion in the Petroleum Company Category, ExxonMobil Canada: Community Food Sharing Association & Junior Achievement Newfoundland & Labrador
Response to the Community Champion Awards nomination process was phenomenal. Nominations were received from the not-for-profit and voluntary sector, as well as from member companies and their employees. The following companies accepted their nominations: Alec G. Henley & Associates, Alex Twells Consulting, BrenKir, Eastern Region Business Solutions, Hometel on Signal Hill, Quality Matters, Women in Resource Development Committee, Benson Myles, NSB Offshore, Oceanic Consulting Corporation, Spectrol Energy Services, 3M Canada, Aliant, Baker Group of Companies, Delta St. John’s w/ Holiday Inn, Global Santa Fe, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, Newfoundland Power, Noble Drilling (Canada) Ltd., North Atlantic Refining, MUN Botanical Garden, PSN, Schlumberger, TD Canada Trust, Technip Canada Ltd., Transocean Canada Company, Chevron Canada Resources Limited, ExxonMobil, Husky Energy Inc., Norsk Hydro Canada Oil and Gas and Petro-Canada. Over 200 charitable organizations were cited as recipients of giving in these nominations.
The winners represented each of the corporate categories defined in NOIA’s membership structure (small, medium and large), as well as one petroleum company (an operator or oil and gas license-holder). Community impact or contribution was measured in terms of financial support, employee time and charitable donations to arts and culture, the environment, sports and recreation, education and/or health and community services.
Nominations were reviewed in confidence by an arm’s length selection committee that included representation from the petroleum and not-for profit sectors. The Community Champion Awards Selection Committee comprised: Selection Committee Chair Stephen Henley, Enersea Canada; Paul Barnes, Manager – Atlantic Canada, Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers; Newfoundland Environmental Industries Association Executive Director Bonnie Andrews; United Way Executive Director Steve Kent; Community Services Council CEO Penny Rowe; and NOIA President & CEO Ted Howell.
